Varina Farms Breakfast Blend

Description

Smooth, crisp, and creamy.

Look, I'll be the first to admit, it's easy to get caught up in the sleek n' shiny packing of some of our industry’s more 'marketable' brands. But what's most difficult is identifying a great cigar, that's a great cigar for actually being a great cigar. And I think this new guy fits the bill rather well. In a word, it's simple. But that's much of the charm - rustic packaging, a classic line up of sizes, and most importantly, a high-quality cigar that's well-blended and damn tasty.

Varina Farms debut Breakfast Blend comes dressed in a silky-smooth US-grown Connecticut Shade wrapper which conceals a rich, well-aged mixture of Nicaraguan, Honduran, and Dominican long-fillers. The result is crisp, creamy blend that's brimming with notes of oak, toasty tobacco, coffee, pepper, and a touch of sweetness on the finish. Smooth all the way down and mellow to medium in body, this aptly named handmade has plenty of flavor without any unnecessary bite.

I really like these cigars. I bought a box about 10 years ago and enjoyed most of them and saved one for a special day. I found the one I'd saved a few weeks ago, smoked it and realized I've missed out on a decade of enjoying these great cigars!!! These go great on early Sunday morning in the summer with coffee.

The wrapper seems to be thin, and there are some large tobacco chunks in the filler.

Solid built stick..even burn and even taste. Good amount of smoke. No lingering after taste yet full of flavor. I can break down the taste like the "pros" do but I'd say I taste cedar? Good smoke either way. Will buy again!

I'm usually not a fan of light to medium cigars but this one was amazing. It is a great mix of Nicaraguan filler with a Connecticut wrapper. I usually don't call a product an everyday cigar but I can put that label on this one. This was my first Cigar by Varina Farms but it definitely will not be my last. Highly recommend!

I have been smoking this cigar for a number of years. It is a great cigar but I love the concept blended specifically to have with coffee after breakfast. I just learned the orrigen of the name: it was named after the first tobacco plantation owned by John Smith and Pocahantus.

Been ordering from CI for about 7-8 years. Stumbled on Varina Farms 2 years ago.... it's been my go-to everyday smoke ever since. Gonna order a couple boxes today.

Nice mid-morning cigar. Starts smooth and get a little more flavorful as you smoke it down. Perfect for me.

This is an outstanding medium bodied CT cigar. It is on par with R&J Reserva Real (90 rated) and CAO Gold (90 rated) for a little less. Construction and burn are perfect. Smooth draw with flavors of coffee and cream. I keep a few in the humidor for cold mornings with a cup of coffee.

I'm a veteran cigar smoker and will first start by stating that a high quality cigar almost always starts with a long filler, heavy in weight, firmly rolled and appealing to the eye from my perspective. I've purchased these a while back when they were on sale. I thought the flavor was on point, the draw was too tight which caused the burn to go out. We all know every time you re-light a stogie it starts to take in bad flavors and odors from fuel, burnt ash, etc.. With that said, I look for a long filler (not Dominican), firm roll, heavy feel when held, and good taste. This one had all of these requirements I look for in a quality cigar, I would buy again even though the burn was somewhat fair (for a tightly rolled cigar). The point I'm making is that this cigar comes from quality tobacco and is made with quality.

The cigars I ordered were feted out when I got them, I've been trying to fix them in the humidor. Mixed results

I think this cigar is a very good smoke. I only recently discovered the Varina Farms cigars and wish I would have tried one years ago. They are mild with a great taste!! When I was younger I enjoyed full bodied cigars but now I prefer milder smokes.

At the time of this review, I just received an e-mail with an offer for a 10 pack of the robustos of the VF Breakfast Blend. I don't think I've had the robusto (see another review where the writer said he's been smoking those for years). I think I've only had the Churchill and the Toro, probably gave away the robusto from the Sampler pack. At this writing, I see that all of the sizes except the robustos are sold out. So that means, either they are hugely popular or they are being discontinued. I think that would be a mistake, although, CI has the numbers, I don't. I found them to be a very enjoyable, milder smoke that actually had FLAVOR! My only criticism of the cigar is the flaking of the wrapper and cigar kind of coming apart in the last couple inches ... in my experience ... but I enjoyed the few I've smoked. Secondly, I favored the Winter Warmer blend, which is darker, held together better, and had the flavors and strength that fit more in my wheelhouse. I noticed that they are not even listed now ... good thing I still have a couple of 10ct. boxes in reserve. Please see "Katman's" comprehensive and positive review of those. One word of advice to CI ... two things that led to some veteran cigar smokers deriding this cigar and not giving it a real chance, is the brand name and the unfortunate type of tissue used in wrapping the cigars which resemble a device used with the body cavity so close in name to the brand (I'm trying to be delicate here.) It didn't bother me, I liked the packaging, I thought it was classy, but it was derided by those with vulgar minds ... Having said that, I think if CI will read the review which I just mentioned, it begins with a historical note on the name Varina Farms going back to the earliest days of English colonial history in the great state of Virginia. Please include this in your ad copy telling us why you named this cigar as you did. It is fascinating to me.

I have smoked the robusto for years and thought I would try the toro. I received a very tightly rolled box that I sent back after smoking about two inches of the first cigar.

Enjoyed these very much. Part of cache I took on extended cruise. The taste, length and quality made for some delightful afternoon's sitting by the pool smoking a cigar. Highly recommend. Will order more in the future.

Customer Testimonials
I wanted to try these guys for a yr & half, but never pulled the trigger on them. Finally found them on special so I purchase a 10 pack for peanuts. Normally I'm a fuller bodied maduro fan, but I enjoy the occasional Connecticut. These sticks are exceptional for what they are. Beautiful construction, perfect draw, great burn & nice flavors. Plenty of smoke, even burn & nice, solid white ash. Flavors are wood, sweet hay with some toastiness & a little cream. Nice morning smoke or good for beginners. Get some. You won't regret it.

I occasionally have a mild cigar with coffee in the early AM. Based on the name alone the Varina Farms Breakfast Blend seemed to be the perfect stick, and it was. These cigars are very finely crafted. The cigars have flawless wrappers, are perfectly filled and firm, and have a perfect draw. As far as flavors go, these are very mild, creamy, with notes of biscuits or crackers, no pepper or bite, and compliment coffee very well. I heartily recommend you try this cigar if you want a very high quality, but mild cigar. These will not disappoint! Worth the money. Try a sample pack if you still have doubts!

Love the cigars but the wrappers are a tough to remove.
WM of Lorena, TX
Excellent! Has a Connecticut Shade wrapper and a Connecticut Broadleaf binder, just like the great cigars of old. It is mild, as the name suggests, but has plenty of taste, and an even and slow burn, and plenty of thick smoke. A winner.
CB of WELLFLEET, MA
Living up to the name, this is a perfect AM cigar! I mostly stick to heavier cigars, but these sticks really work to start the day. More medium than mild, they burn and smoke well all the way to the end. Flavor has good notes of leather and the cigar finishes clean. The great packaging of these cigars is a definite plus. Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover.
LG of Alpharetta, GA
Very easy light. Excellent construction, draw and burn. No touchups required and a solid ash. Heavy smoke output. Medium thickness and creamy mouth feel. Mild strength with solid medium flavors. Sweet bread, sweet caramel and light coffee notes. Average length on the finish after each draw and the cigar remains very consistent from beginning to end for strength and flavors.

Hands-down one of the best Connecticut-wrapped cigars I have ever tried! Perfect with morning coffee...
RD of Dallas, TX
Sorry to all of you dyed in the wool, full strength he-men out there, I am an occasional cigar smoker and enjoy mild to med cigars. I even enjoy a sweeter cigar once in a while (this one is NOT sweet). Of everything I have tried from "tastes just like" to Macanudo, the Varina Farms Breakfast Blend is mild, tasty, burns nice, and most enjoyable. In fact, one of the best mild to med cigars I have ever tried. A bit expensive for my limited budget, but these were a real treat.
TM of Ellicott City, MD
A great new cigar! The build quality of these cigars is wonderful. They are a very tasty mild-medium cigar, and the individual wrapping is pretty sweet.
MM of LONACONING, MD
A great cigar, will have to buy a new humidor just for my vfb
MP of MYRTLE BEACH, SC
Absolutely amazing smoke from first to last draw. This one will not disappoint!
JZ of Wayne, NJ
These have quickly become regulars in Kismet Shrine's Cigar Club humidor. Flavorful, easy to smoke and one of the most pleasurable cigars we've enjoyed.
RM of Great Neck, NY
I received two of these in a sampler pack, and while I enjoyed the taste, I was not happy with the construction; the wrapper on both cigars cracked and unpeeled the first about 1/2 way through, the second after about 2 minutes. I havent had this problem with any other cigars in my humidor
JW of FRONT ROYAL, VA
Like many of the reviews contained here, I'm a big skeptic when it comes to believing someone's review of cigars without ever knowing who they are. Well, ya gotta trust me on this one, even though you don't know who I am. I've been smoking stogies for a very long time. What a huge surprise when I took the gamble of buying these Varina farms sticks. They are every bit the cigars that the reviews say they are and then some. Great construction, tasty tobacco, amazing draw, and an unbelievable price!! They are even wrapped beautifully and I even kept the box. Buy some and you'll know why I wrote this review. I don't ever do but I had to tell someone who appreciates a great cigar.
CM of BOCA RATON, FL
A great cigar for those who like to smoke a milder cigar every now and then between full bodies. This is far from the type of cigars I smoke, Diesel, Edge, etc. Nevertheless its smooth body flavour last all the way to the end of the 7 X 54 I smoked. For me there was a strong hint of cedar through the nose, along with a potpourri spice. A cigar that should be tried by all smokers.
DM of TAYLOR, MI
Being a fan of full-bodied cigars, I'm very picky about mild cigars. I received one of these in a 'cigar of the month' club. I was pleasantly surprised! It did remind me of eggs and bacon. Two factors stood out for me. The complexity of the flavor profile and the 'weight' of the cigar. This baby is packed full and still has a great draw. Well worth the price.
