Joya de Nicaragua JOYA Red

Description

Joya de Nicaragua paints the town red.

The stories surrounding Joya de Nicaragua's handmades stretch from sea to shining sea. Like brave knights coming to battle a fearsome dragon, many enthusiasts have entered the fray confident, only to be quickly tamed by bold, powerful profiles. I've seen it all too many times. We even had a guy pass out while using the facilities at one of our stores....he was puffing on it like a locomotive stuck on overdrive. Luckily, after about a 5 minute tile nap, he exited with just a bruised ego. He, like many before him, learned that Joya de Nicaragua makes one hell of a full-bodied cigar. But now, Joya de Nicaragua dials the strength down a bit for a cigar that's built for daily enjoyment. Without any further delay welcome, JOYA Red.

Many of Joya de Nicaragua's handmades rely on potent ligeros to deliver their feisty bouquet. This time, lower tobacco primings were chosen to impart the same core flavors, but in a much more palatable fashion. Long-fillers from the uber-fertile regions of Esteli, Condega, and Jalapa, were stuffed into a golden hued Nicaraguan Habano wrapper. This recipe yielded a medium-bodied bouquet boasting strong doses of roasted nuts and pepper, as hints of leather, toast, and coffee also enter the fray. In a nutshell, JOYA Red is going to appeal to fans of Joya de Nicaragua, as well as newcomers of all shapes and sizes. Heck, even those still licking their wounds should thoroughly enjoy this one.

JOYA Red received a well-deserved '90' rating noting: "The lush draw of this cigar delivers a strong black pepper character that settles down to show notes of hickory, brown sugar and earth."

Very nice for a 20-min. smoke. Once in a while there is a defect at the head but I can deal with it. Very tasty and good room note.

This is a great smoke, especially if you have less than 20 minutes to smoke a stogie. I will order these again and again!

Great little smoke roughly about 30 min, it’ burned really well, some of the construction on a few of them looked like there was no love put into them, such as sloppy cap and wrapper kinda looked like it was rushed. Otherwise I would buy again. Very flavorful

Right away the scent was very nice. After lighting up I was treated to a very smooth smoke. True to the description, this was more of a mild to medium cigar, but chocked full of good flavor and i enjoyed it fully. For me, this is definitely a great everyday cigar

Nice cigar! Liked the aroma and flavors! I did have to work on the burn since the cigar assembly was too tight. Overall, nice smoke would buy again. Thank You!!!

These are really pretty nice little smokes. I find them to be medium to full bodied with a pleasant earthy quality. Not harsh and hot like a lot of the smaller cigars. Good choice for a 20 minute break.

These were even better than I expected. Great smoke output and the flavor profile is more rounded and complex than I expected based on the "Clasico Picollino" I had had from Joya de Nicaragua before.

Good mild/medium smoke, burns even and slow every time. Great choice for smokers who prefer a nice mild smoke. The size was just right for a even draw and a smoke lasting 45 mins.

Hard to find, easy to smoke! Nicely constructed with an even burn and perfect draw. A medium strength cigar with flavors including leather, earth and spice. It has quickly become one of my favorites.

I'm not too familiar with Cigarillos. Smoked one of these today and it was OK...probably 15 minutes. Smoked well but not much on flavor. Fairly new to my humidor so I'm not sure if time will to it any good...not actually sure if Joya is for me. I like a smaller cigar sometime, so I tried these; but I think I would prefer a Corona. I would NOT discourage anyone from trying them...like I did...and you decide for yourself.

Recently this is one of my favorite cigars. this is my second box purchase. This is a well-balanced smoke with lots of hints of leathery chocolate and nougat also has undertones of nutmeg and Spice. A medium to full-bodied cigar but a very Mellow Smoke

I bought a box of these to try and I love them. Smooth and nice burn. My only complaint is that some of them were very spongie or soft at the end. Other than that, a really great everyday smoke that you will absolutely love.

I've always been a big fan of Joya de Nicaragua cigars. They are satisfying and a pleasure to smoke. The Joya Reds was somewhat disappointing. The draw is excellent, the first 1/3 was rather tasteless as was the remainder. They were well rolled burnt evenly and left a long clean ash. This one is just not my cup of tea!

Great flavors, but terrible issues with the burn. The majority of the ends split after cutting them. I also had trouble with getting the right humidity as they always seem too moist. The box of cigars was basically a waste of money.

These are the most even burning, tastiest medium bodied cigars I and my wife have ever smoked. Maybe I need to get out more but I bought 4 more boxes, I would rather run out of toilet paper than run out of these!

I bought a box because I had previously had them an enjoyed them. As I went through the box I noticed a inconsistency in the draw. Some burned really nicely from beginning to end. Some started out with a tight draw but got better. Some had a tight draw from the beginning till I reached the max of my frustration. That said, when I got a good one I enjoyed it. Medium body. Come on Joya, you can do this!

This cigar gets good reviews, but it just didn't "wow" me. I noticed a hot blast of pepper when I first lit it. It remained full-bodied, but I could notice moments of creaminess, nuts and toast. All in all it stayed heavy with pepper during and after the smoke. I finished the stick, but would probably not buy the Toro again. I might give it another try in the Robusto size.

I have come to really enjoy the Joya Red. They are priced reasonably enough to smoke every day and the Canonazo is just the right size to kick back after work and unwind. One annoyance kept me from giving five stars (in fact, I would have given 3 1/2 if that were possible). The draw on 90% of each box is spot on but the other 10% end up in the ash can. The draw is just impossible. Not quite a deal breaker as I really like these smokes just very annoying.

I knew these weren’t traditional JDN cigars but I am very disappointed anyway. The flavor is something like dry hay. I’ve only smoked two of them and I really wish I could return them but I don’t have the time. Both times the wrapper started unraveling 1/3rd of the way through. Live and learn purchase. I have $50 bundles in my humidor that run circles around these. Very disappointed...

Red is the New Joya

Jeff K

As a self-appointed ambassador of all things cigars, I spend a lot of time thinking about branding. And if there’s one thing that makes me nervous it’s the words “rebranding” and “new directions.” Normally well-intentioned, many “rebranding” campaigns unfortunately end up as big failures (New Coke, anyone?). So you can understand my initial hesitance around Joya Red. A classic Nicaraguan brand known for their kick-ass, powerhouse cigars was going to deliver a smooth and medium-bodied blend? I wasn’t convinced. So when the boxes landed on our docks, I did what needed to be done — snuck a box of Toros away and headed upstairs to perform a little QA.

The first impression was great. While most boxes from Joya are chunky, weighty, and very “old-school”, I like this new approach to packaging here. The red and gold band looks nice against the golden-brown Habano wrapper, and the box is sharp. Paper wrapped, each box contains 20 cigars, in two rows of ten. The next step here was easy. I picked the cigar with the shiniest cellophane, broke out the ol’ cutter and lighter, and began puffing away.

At first, this cigar is rather mellow. There’s a sweetness to it (CA calls it “brown sugar”, that’s a little too technical for me), with a crisp and clean tobacco core. It’s good, but the best was yet to come. Around an inch in flavors of roasted nuts join the mix, and as the cigar burns down it’s only picking up steam. Eventually, I was given a nice medium-bodied mixture of wood, toasty tobacco, coffee, and some hints of black pepper. In all, everything kept cool and smooth, never even inching into the full-bodied territory of some other JdN’s like Antano 1970 or Dark Corojo. But the flavors certainly kept coming. By the end of this cigar, you’re left with a super satisfying, palate-smacking wallop of delicious Nicaraguan goodness, all without breaking a sweat. I let this one burn down as far as I could go without burning my fingers, and then stashed the rest of the box in my humidor.

As you may have guessed at the beginning of this review, I wasn’t sure I’d like the “new” Joya, but I tried Red anyway. And I’m glad I did. Joya Red is a fantastic cigar that I can heartily recommend to anyone who enjoys a balanced blend. It’s smooth, complex, and subtle — a perfect contender for your new daily stick.
