Joya de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo

Description

Mmm....Dark Corojo.

Created 10 years after the launch of the landmark Joya de Nicaragua Antaño blend, the new Dark Corojo puts a unique and welcomed spin on Nicaragua's Classic handmade. Created with 3-year aged Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos and a special Corojo leaf wrapper that's dark, oily and loaded with flavor. Naturally robust but impressively smooth, JdN Dark Corojo exudes a rich series of earth, cedar, pepper, cocoa and a slightly sweet finish. Complete, refined and worthy of the Joya de Nicaragua name.

And as if this brand wasn't powerful enough, JDN has added a "bulldozer" to its lineup. The box-pressed La Niveladora, which is the Spanish term for the titanic land-mover, just solidifies the strength behind this brand. If you're looking for a strong, satisfying blend, make sure you keep these Dark Corojos in your rotation.

Joyo de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo received a well-deserved 90-rating noting: "A dark and strikingly oily torpedo that delivers a bready, cedary and earthy smoke with wheaty and sweet intonations and a spicy, red-pepper finish."

I am giving five stars to the cigars; however, it was sealed well when they arrived but not humidified. I usually buy these boxes, and I would assume they're stored in their humidor. They appeared very dry this time, all my cigars were just dry, and the binders and wrapper were peeling off. I usually put brand new cigars in my custom-made humidor with 1/4" thick cedar all around that's always maintained for about a week before I smoke the cigars. Even after a week, I'm having a hard time keeping them lit, and the taste is different. If that's the case, I'd rather purchase them locally at a Cigar shop. On a normal level, these cigars are excellent smoke, and the draw is smooth. The taste is delicious.

I enjoy the rich spiciness of the leaf and the oily smooth taste with that slow draw for me. Another One!

This has to be one of the strongest sticks ive ever smoked. I mean a total head banger. Just what the doctor ordered. Add some Monkey Shoulder and be prepared for a pretty awesome night. Sidenote: I wouldnt be in position to operate heavy machinery afterwards. LOLOL

I had terrible luck with these. Very difficult draw and hard to keep lit. I typically have to relight each one a minimum of 4x. Light up, some for a while, goes out...repeat. It’s very disappointing given how much I love the Antaño 1970 and even the joya red. I won’t be buying these again.

These are another winner from Joya de Nicaragua. Not as spicy as the 1970 but still very strong and full-bodied.

I bought a box of these some time ago and was so impressed that I bought another. I always let Cigars age before trying them. At least 6 months but usually one year. Aging eliminates burn problems, lighting problems, draw problems, etc. These are top Cigars. They aren't Oliva Master Blends or Prensado but they are really up there

i'm stingy with the 5 star ratings but this one deserves it.. This is a great smoke. Strong and spicy with strong mineral tones, it's a winner. It has a good burn and a ton of thick smoke. If full and Nicaraguan is for you, try this cigar.

Ive been smoking these for about 3 years now. I typically reserve them for late night bourbon and bbq nights with the boys. Definitley a strong cigar but that being said i think its nothing overwhelming. Its a nice blend of oaky ,earthy and creamy with just enough spice that you can detect it in the nostrils. The only reason im giving it a 4 and not a 5 is they never burn perfect or light up easily. Still the flavors are totally there.

Customer Testimonials
Just finished my very first one of these and was completely blown away. Have been a fan of Joya de Nicaragua's line for some time, but this one may be my new favorite. Very rich cocoa and earth flavors. Definitely not a cigar you want to miss out on.
JD of INDIANAPOLIS, IN
Got a sampler with one of the J D N Antano Dark Corojo in it. It has been in the humi for a couple of months or so and decided to smoke it the other day. I agree that this is a strong cigar, but it is also very smooth and smoked beautifully from start to finger burning finish. Never did it bite, get hot, bitter or anything else. As I got into it a ways I kept expecting it to get stronger or something but it pretty much stayed the same. Usually I would be disappointed when a cigar does this, but not so with this one. The flavor was amazing; it was clean on the pallet and I cannot imagine how I could have asked for a closer match to the Cubans I bought in Canada a long time back. The flavor and the strength and smoothness; WOW. If they will all smoke like this one did, I will have a new favorite. Don't be afraid of this cigar, it is strong but a real treat .....NO BITE!!! Saving up to buy a box

This is without a doubt one of the best cigars I have ever smoked. it is a great tasting, full-bodied cigar, well worth the money!
PL of Chesapeake, VA
Picked up a corona sized 5 x 44 at a local B&M. An absolute fire cracker that lasted for one hour 15 minutes. Pleasant full bodied flavor and absolutely no strength buzz to ruin the experience. When I financially recover from recent excessive stogie purchases, I'm going to do a little excessive purchasing on this stick.
RA of MESA, AZ
The first premium cigars I ever bought, back in 1975, were Joya de Nicaragua. I was impressed. I'm a pipe smoker, so I don't buy a lot of cigars, and for all I knew many other premiums might be as good as Joyas. Recently, I stole (bought) the sampler + humidor combo from CI - a fantastic deal, and a sampler of Dark Corojos to see if they were as good as I remembered, and what size I might prefer. I'm still no connoisseur, but I think the dark wrapper makes them even better. Far and away the best cigar I've ever tasted!
MS of Westover, WV
Joya de Nicaragua makes some of the strongest, most flavorful cigars available today. Antano 1970 has long been a favorite of mine. Celebration is very good too. Along comes Antano Dark Corojo Doble Fuerte & all I can say is "WOW"! I received 3 robusto sized toros in a freebie deal when I purchased a box of Celebration coronas. 2 days off the truck & I am smoking my 1st Antano Dark Corojo, ever. I am duly impressed, too. The red tinged dark brown wrapper is skillfully draped over a tasty blend of 3 year aged long filler that brings some real full bodied muscle to the party. Cedar, cacao, black tobacco & an underlying sweetness highlight a roller coaster ride of full flavored goodness. Smooth as a baby's bottom & complex to the extreme, I have instantly fallen in love with ADC. The El Martillo's 5.5" X 54 frame seems a perfect vehicle for displaying the delicious tobaccos at play here. Construction is firm, heavy & spot on. I cut the double cap to allow scads of smoke to rush forth from the trademark easy draw. Highly recommended to fullheads or anyone ready to make the move toward ful bodied/full flavored done right. 94/100 Stupendous! I wasn't halfway through my toro, when I put a box of the Peligroso coronas in my basket. Thanks to the freebie, the normal cost of well over 4 bones per stick, gets knocked down to 2 clams & 4 bits.
BB of LOVELAND, OH
I have been smoking cigars for many years now and I feel that I am pretty well versed in a great variety of med-full bodied cigars. I have to say through all the years and different cigars I have tried this has to be my favorite. There are others that can compare dont get me wrong. But not for the money, this is by far the best 7 dollar stick money can buy. That is of course speaking of this brand, if I have the chance to grab this cigar in the Pesadilla 4.7x60 shape, there is no other choice for me. It is simply perfect. Fat short and the perfect taper. As soon as I make a little room in my humidor I will be ordering another box of these. If I could only smoke one cigar the rest of my life, the Joya de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo Pesadilla would be it.
AP of ENGLISHTOWN, NJ
i was left pretty unimpressed by this offering. i have a good variety from "cheap" cigars (seconds, puros indios etc) to premium, ab tempus, pepin garcias... when i smoke one of the premiums i expect it to wow me. i was not wowed by this cigar. it felt strong, but there wasn't a whole lot of flavor so to speak. it picked up in the last third as i approchaed the band.. now that i think of it, the jdn rosalones is in the same boat... maybe jdn just isn't for me, but i'd rather smoke a "second" cigar for 1.5$ that has tons of flavor and maybe burns a little wierd over a "premium" 6$ cigar that's flat.
CE of Milford, PA
This cigar is not for the novice. Full flavored and strength, great taste, even burn, nice aroma. Offers a lot of smoke with almost no effort. I love this one! Be sure you smoke it on a full stomach.
FS of GAITHERSBURG, MD
excellent flavor.
JF of HARVEST, AL
I hopscotch around, rarely smoking the same cigar more than once a week. This flavorfest of a cigar has cured my ADD. Wonderful flavor bomb. I have yet to smoke one that was a bummer. Great draw, fluid construction, emphatic ligero flavor and a superb wrapper. Can't get enough Antano Dark Corojos!
BR of GIG HARBOR, WA
I received one of these after signing up with CRA as one of my free cigars. It has a great burn, aroma and taste. I can already see myself ordering more of these.

Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Dark Corojo

Steve R

A few days ago, my December issue of Cigar Aficionado was delivered. Today, I got around to leafing through it. Amongst the ads for countless items I’ll never be able to afford, something caught my eye, inspiring me to write this staff review. Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Dark Corojo received an ‘88’ rating. Wait a minute....

Let’s go back 10 years. An 88-point score would be a dynamite rating. I cry foul. Today’s rating system is seriously skewed – 91s and 92s are now commonplace, and we frequently see ratings as high as 93, 94, and even 95 – usually for the same brands or countries of origin, mind you. These new, bloated scores make an 88 seem so....well, mediocre.

So why was I inspired to write this review? Because the JdN Dark Corojo is a good cigar. A damn good cigar, and I disagree with the 88-point score in today’s rating scheme. I’ll explain....

Let’s face it, when it comes to full-bodied, full-flavored cigars, Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 is a frequent mention. This Nicaraguan puro may not be the powerhouse it once was – due to the influx of some seriously full-bodied blends now on the market – but the Antaño cigar brings the brass in a smooth, velvety fashion that almost anybody can enjoy. And, after years of experimenting, blending, and perfecting, the folks at Joya de Nicaragua have released an even fuller variety in the Dark Corojo, and it’s flippin’ good.

As one would expect from Joya de Nicaragua, the Dark Corojo is a brute, sitting heavy in the hand and jam-packed big boy tobaccos. The Corojo-seed wrapper is grown in Nicaragua, and has been carefully fermented to achieve a super-dark color and excessively oily sheen. The Nicaraguan long-fillers within contain plenty of ligero aged 3 years prior to rolling and expertly blended, producing a bold yet bready-sweet pre-light aroma that’ll make your mouth water after just one whiff.

My 5.5”x54 El Martillo is cut, lit, and already producing a ton of dark, thick smoke. My palate is greeted by a rich and creamy core of dense, deep tobacco flavors. This initially rush of Nicaraguan tobacco goodness is soon met with a toasty blast of wood – an oaky influence that’s like velvet, sitting heavily on the palate and clinging to the taste buds. There’s an underlying spice at play that’s neither moderate nor overwhelming. Just a gentle touch of pepper that teases my taste buds. And then, just as I'm kicking my feet up to savor this slow-burner, the ligero-laced power kicks in, soothing my senses with the possibility of modifying my motor skills. Hang in there Steve. Stick around for the long haul, because I'm in for a treat at the end. While the power doesn’t instensify, the flavors do, becoming more complex toward the nub. Indeed, this cigar has taken yet another turn, becoming richer in character with a hint of roasted coffee mixed in about an inch before risking your fingertips. No doubt satisfying, the Dark Corojo is a powerful, flavorful handmade I'll easily find myself craving again in the near future....after my motor skills are back.

Yeah....that’s my take on Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Dark Corojo. 88? Please. Let’s get serious here, folks.
