Now I know what you’re thinking, isn’t that a Metallica song? While you would be correct, today we have a little something extra for you. A unique collaboration between some guys you may have heard of who just downright love cigars; Johnathan Drew, James Hetfield (Metallica Co-founder), and Rob Dietrich (Master distiller of BLACKENED American Whiskey). This project has taken more the 2 years to come to life with both Hetfield and Dietrich tasting numerous samples and giving specific feedback to create what they feel is the perfect cigar!

Maduro is the star of this show! A Connecticut River Valley Broadleaf Maduro binder is tucked underneath an oily Mexican San Andres Maduro wrapper to create a bold and flavorful profile. Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania Broadleaf Maduro fillers are blended together and deliver bold notes of coffee and dark chocolate. With this combination of people, we would expect nothing less than the use of the boldest ligero that Drew Estate has to offer to really make this blend stand out. I received an M81 in the CoTM shipment, October or November 2023. Being a Drew Estate creation, I was not disappointed. So I ordered a box of the Metallica driven brand to continue enjoying the dark undertones and crisp finish I experienced with the first. Overall, the quality is pretty good, and if you're into maduros you won't be disappointed. Some caveats. The box I received was rather on the dry side, probably due to sitting around in the warehouse, which is not uncommon for a boutique brand with low sales flow. They're sitting in my humidor getting, well...rehumidified, so I expect the state will improve. Of the three I've smoked, one was blocked making it hard to draw, but I powered through and all was okay by the end. I'll decide whether to re-up when I get near the end of this tour.

This stick is in my top 5. Since it came out I’ve bought 8 boxes. Pairs really well with the Blackened whiskey. Full bodied Maduros are my favorite and this stick hits the mark. Papa Het smokes one before every concert. Highly recommend.

These cigars are so good I had to go grab a corn on the cob holder to use as a makeshift nub holder so that I could smoke it all the way to the end. I'm a Drew Estate fan prior to this, as well as Metallica fan. So with the collaboration on this cigar from both it was a must try for me, and man it doesn't disappoint. When I give reviews I try and give more then just the simple 1-2 sentences that tell you simply the liked or didn't like it, I try and give as much info so that others can have a potential starting point to enjoy their smoke time to the fullest. My first pair attempt was with Rumchata straight over ice, I know the obvious choice would be a whiskey, but trust me when I say this pairing is just perfect. The hints of spice from the M81 brought out the cinnamon of the Rumchata, ant then with the hints of chocolate coming into the mixture it enhanced the creamy texture of the Rumchata and also gave it a smooth chocolate milk like taste to boot. Next tried it with Cinnamon Toast drink (Rumchata and Fireball Whiskey shaken and strained), again the pairing was perfect as the spice enhanced the drink. Definitely worth getting a supply on hand when ever possible. While the M81 is best when enjoyed with whiskey, the Rumchata pairing is right there with it. Draw was smooth, burn was even and slow, and smoke was relaxing.

Awesome cigar. Definitely get the chocolate and coffee but I noticed a lot of leathery oil, too. Paired with a heavily peated Ben Riach 12. I didn’t think it was too strong (but I’ve been known to smoke 4 or 5 cigars on a good night so not sure if I’m a good judge). Great draw and burn. Took it all the way to a nub. Good cigar worthy of the Metallica brand.

Not as strong as the hype but very good. As a full body smoker the subtle flavors are everything I want but lack the punch. Could smoke 2 in a row, very good, chocolate and coffee all the way through, toss in some black pepper and I would have a new favorite! Worth a try and on the occasion I want to share with a medium to medium full smoker I'll keep some on hand and you should too.

Been a fan of their music since they started, a fan of their whiskey for awhile now, and then they go and do this and now I’m a big fan of this cigar! Bought a few and just fired up this corona. Great look, even burn, nice draw, and a slightly bold but not overpowering flavor. Looking over my budget now, I gotta get a box. This cigar is called Blackened, but it’s also the One for me.
